Prior to Samartex’s success this year, only Eleven Wise, Sekondi Hasacaas and Medeama SC were the only club from the region to have won the competition since its inception in 1958.

Eleven Wise won the league in 1960, before Hasacaas in 1977, it took the region almost 50 years to grab the ultimate trophy a feat achieved by Medeama SC in the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League.

FC Samartex beat Accra Lions 2-0 in the final round of league games to crown the memorable moment.

Samartex will represent Ghana in next season’s CAF Champions League.

Historically, Samartex are now the 13th team in history to win the Ghana Premier League, a competition otherwise dominated by a few forces at the top. The Premier League has acted as the uppermost echelon of the country’s football pyramid since it replaced its predecessor, the Gold Coast Club Competition, in 1956.

The Previous Ghana League winners have been Asante Kotoko, Hearts of Oak, AshantiGold, Accra Great Olympics, Real Republicans, Eleven Wise, Ebusua Dwarfs, Hasacaas, Aduana Stars, Berekum Chelsea, Wa All Stars, Medeama SC and Samartex.

Performance by Western Region clubs:

•1959/1960- Sekondi Elven Wise ( National League)

•1976/77 – Sekondi Hasacaas ( National League)

•2022/23- Medeama SC ( Ghana Premier League)

•2023/24- Samartex FC( Ghana Premier League)
