Ghana will miss next year’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after recording a 1-1 stalemate against Angola in their matchday 5 qualifier on Friday evening.
The Black Stars urgently needed a win in Luanda to boost their chances of qualifying for Afcon 2025, but Otto Addo’s side looked pale, uncommitted, and lacking identity to defeat the Palancas Negras.
Jordan Ayew registered the lead for Ghana with a delightful free kick in the 18th minute. Angola could have equalized in the 28th minute but Mbala’s penalty was saved by Abdul Manaf Nuredeen.
Ghana held on and went to halftime with the lead despite Angola’s impressive waves of attack.
After the break, the Negras continued their pursuit of the equalizer and they played purposeful football while Ghana struggled to catch up in midfield. As the game transcended to the hour mark, Pedro Goncalves’ charges upped their game further and finally their play was rewarded.
Zini, who replaced Nzola, leveled the scores with a powerful strike header in the 64th minute to make the game 1-1 after full 90 minute.
Its been 3 draws and 2 defeats in the qualification period and it’s over for the men’s senior national team.
The last time Ghana missed out on the Africa’s biggest national team tourney was in 2024 hosted by Tunisia.
8 withdrawal from this international assignment, 7 injuries and I due to personal reasons, Otto Addo’s captaincy decisions, Thomas Partey getting sidelined and whatever you might have thought of, has marred Ghana’s campaign.
